Alas, it is hard to imagine an economic scenario where enough business activity migrates to small Missouri towns to reverse the current trend. As bad as things are now, the future for rural Missouri includes continued loss of folks and funds.
Still, that pastor’s theme parrots conventional GOP wisdom claiming Missouri is a predominately rural state and that rural life is best.
Just as in Ray Bradbury’s bleak future where firemen start fires, today the primary duty of staff at the Department of Social Services is to deny help to the needy.
Unfortunately, this is Missouri where guns ownership is a right granted by God and asking for additional money for policing or enhanced probation supervision is a non-starter in the Capitol.
As the health care debate heats up, it’s time to be clear about what Medicare for All is and what it is not. Medicare for All does not mean giving people the option to “buy in” to Medicare under our current health insurance system—what might be called Medicare for Some.
The bottom line? Republican legislators want smaller government at all costs. If families get whacked by opioid abuse or teachers don’t get pay raises for years, well, that’s acceptable so that state government can shrink – and taxes lowered.
