West County Democrats Meeting Report – October 12, 2020

For those unable to attend our meeting, it has been recorded and available here:

Due to the limited legislative activity in Jefferson City and Washington, Glenn’s update was short, so there is no written legislative update.  The chat interaction with the audience during the meeting is below.

Announcements and Comments during the meeting

From ANNE SCHWEITZER : Hi all! Anne Schweitzer from Dr. Page’s campaign team here! Dr. Page asked me to say hello to you all, and ask everyone to please send comments to the County Council against the bill that would potentially remove the mask mandate. If you could send a public comment (up to 400 words) on Tuesday before 5:00pm to CouncilComments@stlouisco.com that would be a significant help. Note that emailed comments must be sent *on Tuesday,* as the Council rules require comments to be posted the day of the meeting. Commenters must include their first and last name. I’m telling people to tell their story – how COVID has impacted them personally and why the Council should not vote for ending public health and safety orders. Please end by asking them to reject bills 220, 222 and 223.

Re: General Discussion and Dues Announcement

From Marlene Bricker : Could you put address in chat?
From Mary Gross : repeat that PO box again please?
From Maureen Jordan : Thank you Anne, I commented yesterday!
From Cathy Marek : 100 days until the inauguration!
From Jessica LaBozzetta : Please make sure to mute yourself!
From Karen Cloyd : P.O. Box 31034 Des Peres 63131

From ANNE SCHWEITZER : Thanks, Glenn, for answering questions about these bills! We definitely need to keep our mask mandate! It cannot be a partisan issue. Needs to be a health issue!

Re: Tony Messenger presentation

From Lloyd & Bobbie : What’s the title of this column?
From Lloyd & Bobbie : https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/columns/tony-messenger/messenger-a-fake-facebook-post-about-st-louis-schools-goes-viral-with-maga-crowd-and/article_82f2ed65-af42-5510-a3da-a819048d8cdb.html

From Karen Cloyd : @onymess is one of my favorite Twitter follows
From Karen Cloyd : Nope. @tonymess

From Mary Gross she/ her/ hers : very thoughtful analysis!

From ANNE SCHWEITZER : What do you think about the County Council bills to put time limits on health guidelines?

From Ellen Wentz : How do we deal with the militia after the election?

From Terry Gates : Your column today focused on school per-pupil funding. Does money determine school quality?

From Glenn Koenen : Quick question: have you received any feedback from rura;l readers about your columns on the problems in Ferguson and other racial issues?

From Grace James : Do you think the increased militancy of these right wing extremist groups would have happened in the absence of covid?

From Lloyd & Bobbie : How do you see ballot counting and final election results being handled?

From Christine Garhart : What about Constitutional Amendment No 1—term limits for other offices?

From Cathy Marek : I worked in Rockwood for over 20 years, mostly in the Eureka area. Republican sentiments were tied to cultural sentiments. So very sad that many fail to see that their politics undermine their own best interests and quality of life.

From Ellen Wentz : Should the media start referring to them as terrorist groups instead of militia groups?

From Mary Gross she/ her/ hers : Metzl’s Dying of Whiteness addresses national racism too.

From Diane Brost : Thanks Tony for your insights. Much appreciated.

From Lloyd & Bobbie : Thanks much!
