The Foiled Superhero

Instead of gobbling down two monstrous meals with family on Thanksgiving, we stayed home for our own turkey, gravy, dressing, sweet potatoes, biscuits, mixed vegetables, fruit medley and pecan pie.

Alas, the hours normally spent socializing degraded into more TV time.

Late at night I came across an usual movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  The 2012 flick has honest Abe swinging an ax at vampires atop a moving train headed for a burning trestle.  Of course, he defeats the head neck biter and thence goes to deliver a few lines at Gettysburg.

All of us tend to imagine ourselves as more than we are.  At the same time, most all of us realize our true place in the world and accept both our abilities and limitations.  For example, in my first year playing in the Hanley Hills Optimist league I understood I was the third baseman not because I had more range or quickness than the other guys but because I was the only one who could consistently throw a ball to first base without a bounce.  (Hey, we were 10 years old.)

Donald J. Trump lacks the self-awareness of a typical 10 year old.  He still sees himself as invincible, as a genius, and, as the only rightful President of the United States.

Superheroes don’t fail.  Nor do they make mistakes.

I missed the first run of Trump’s Sunday phone-in to FOX News:

What in the world happened to Maria Bartiromo?  Once a respected journalist who showed her chops as a top business reporter, Bartiromo has seemingly sold her journalistic soul to become a sycophant for President Donald Trump to help push forward his baseless claims of voter fraud and a rigged election. — Poynter

During their talk the President claimed – among other charges – that the FBI and the Justice Department were part of a national conspiracy to deny him his earned election victory.

What’s worse than Trump living in his phony universe?  A mainstream media outlet letting him perpetuate his falsehoods and endorsing his lies to the millions upon millions of, well, not too bright Americans eager to join Trump in Crazyville.

After all, a superhero always tells the truth and is always on the side of justice.

If in coming weeks the Trumpettes act on his falsehoods, well, we’ll refer to the last four years as ‘the quiet time.’

So, as votes from the states get certified and the inevitable end of the Trump presidency comes closer, we must expect more untrue statements from The White House.  The destruction from the inside of the federal bureaucracy and vital benefit programs will continue.  And, anger on FOX News could become violence in the streets as “good citizens” grab their assault rifles to protect the President’s reality.   Because even a foiled superhero still wields a lot of power.

Noted With Sorrow…

Over the weekend a tremendous champion of humanity passed.

Miriam Mahan made Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service  into the premier charity in St. Charles County.  She rallied support to build an organization serving three counties with food, holiday assistance and a variety of social services.  Under her leadership the group partnered with many other organizations – even letting the Department of Social Services have room in their building.

I first met her at Food Pantry Association meetings in the 1980’s.  Time and again I called her for favors: she always came through.

She used her talents to make life better for thousands of struggling families.  She will be missed but her work will never be forgotten.
