The West Lake Landfill: Issues and Actions

West Lake Landfill, located near the intersection of Hwys 270 and 70, is one of 21 Superfund Sites that EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt says needs “immediate and intense” attention.   After 27 years of studies, EPA has selected and published its Preferred Remedy for this site.  EPA has opened a Public Comment period, which closes March 22nd. Your Comments matter as community acceptance is one of the criteria EPA must consider before finalizing the Remedy for this site.  Comments can be submitted in in person at the EPA sponsored public meeting on Tuesday, March 6th, 6:30 PM at the Machinist Hall on St. Charles Rock Road or submitted in writingOnline: Email to:

Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel, Co-founders of Just Moms StL, a grass roots group focused on achieving a safe and permanent solution for this site.  Just Moms StL manages the Facebook page West Lake Landfill that has over 40,000 followers. Ms. Chapman, Ms. Nickels, and Mr. Ferdman have been advocating with local, state, and federal legislators and agencies on behalf of our community since learning about the landfill in 2011.

We collect and deliver food donations for The Circle of Concern food pantry in Valley Park. Bring donations of canned or boxed food to our meetings for transfer to this worthy program (but NOT in Walmart bags—see below).

West County Democrats was formed by a group of concerned citizens.  The purposes of the organization are to educate its members on issues of public, cultural, or political concern, to encourage members to actively support Democratic candidates for political office, and to support social action projects or community support activities as approved by the membership.
