Telemarketers have gained the attention of members of the Missouri Legislature!
Telemarketing companies use fake numbers resembling ones that are common in the recipients’ cell phone areas to trick them into accepting calls they might not otherwise answer, thus gaining a chance to deliver a sales pitch. This ploy also allows them to side-step no-call lists.
In addition, cellphone owners whose numbers have been high-jacked by this method often receive angry return calls from the recipients who want to find out who’s been calling them.
Senator Eric Burlison was getting five calls a day so his legislation, Senate Bill 144, would automatically add use of fake numbers to the state’s no-call list, making violations easier to prosecute.
