Grocery Store Politics

This past Tuesday afternoon I stopped at the Schnucks in Twin Oaks (Big Bend Road near Hwy. 141) to pick-up my daily newspapers.

As I neared the front of line for the check-outs, a guy older than me began shouting about that “fucking Biden” making us pay for “foreign oil” so his friends could get rich.  Also, the President was “starving American children while feeding all the other kids in the damn world.”

‘Shouting’ is not an exaggeration.

I mentioned what I’ve read many times by economists, namely that Presidents from Richard Nixon onward have learned they can’t control the price of oil (and, hence, gasoline), plus that burning other nation’s oil and saving our own makes sense because that way we can wind up with oil when no one else has it.  After all, I said, ”Mother Nature only made so much of the stuff.”

“Bullshit…we have enough goddamn oil for 100 years, that fucking Biden just won’t let companies pull it out of the ground.”

I decided against telling him about contaminated baby formula sickening many children, and, how that plant closure in February starting knocking over dominoes…

Again, really angry old white guy was shouting this profanity laced muck in line at a grocery store in mid-afternoon, loud enough for everyone west of the bakery to hear.

Worse, this probably wasn’t his first rant there: the staff ignored him.   When he got to the checker she greeted him by first name and noted ‘you’re extra loud today.’

Politics in 2022 keeps getting nastier.

Of course, leading Republicans encourage such behavior.  In my mom’s mail this week is a missive from Josh Hawley…

My willingness to boldly call out this administration on national TV, and my fearless determination to fight their America Last schemes in the Senate, makes the Democrats’ blood boil…

The radical left Left’s been after me ever since January 6, 2021, when I opposed certification of the 2020 electoral college results – the FIRST Republican Senator to do so…

Yes, a sitting United States Senator bragging that he challenged the verified results of a presidential election.

The obvious response?  Send Josh $2,900 in the enclosed envelope, today.

While the dust still settles after Tuesday’s primaries, preliminary results further convince me that a Trump endorsed candidate starts with 30% of the GOP vote.  That may not be quite enough to win, but, in a crowded field – like Missouri’s Republican Senate primary – a bad candidate can win with 30%.  Missouri’s Republican Party has plenty of those.

Donald Trump and his ilk encourage supporters to be rude, disrespectful and truth-impaired.  Shouting profanity in a grocery store?  Good work old boy!

And, we’re still in May.  What will the public hear from angry white guys (and gals) in October?
