A few folks in my subdivision go crazy with Halloween decorations, using all of the front yard – and almost as much electricity as a data center – with moving creatures, light shows and scary stuff. More put out a few tombstones or hang ghosts from trees.
I settle for some lights on the porch.
Sunday afternoon I stretched-out the strings and tested the lights inside before I started hanging them up. They all worked. Then I attached the new string of 100 LED bulbs between the pillars flanking the doors. I plugged the older, incandescent bulbs into the end of the LEDs: The new string lit, the old string didn’t. I switched the strings on the extension cord. Thence, the incandescent siting lit but the LEDs didn’t.
Okay, the LED box said I could string up to 45 sets together. Evidently, that only applied if they were all LEDs. I changed extension cords, same result. It should have been an easy, sure thing.
Some sure things aren’t.
Let’s apply that to the election.
Just because polls and prophets predict something with surety, well, it may not be a sure thing.
People lie to pollsters. Or, like me, they never answer a landline call that comes up as “Research” or similar. I don’t answer any pollsters since so many are really come-ons trying to push me towards the answer they’re paid to get.
So, to really help the good people win we need to vote and we need to make sure all our friends vote. Take nothing for granted.
My working theory is that it’s harder to steal an election the more one sided it is. Yes, you can win with 50% + 1, but, a solid 59% is harder to manipulate.
Remember Florida in 2000? Now historians seem to agree that Al Gore took the state by a very, very small margin. George W. Bush got the electoral votes because right-leaning courts could stretch truth and counting tricks enough to give it to him.
We need every vote.
Oh yes, I’m still putting up the incandescent orange Halloween lights…they’ll be on the inside of be living room window, on their own plug.
